SpaceX Delivers Excitement as Starship Reaches Edge-of-Space Milestone; Test Launch Concludes with Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly

SpaceX lived up to its promise of delivering excitement with the execution of the second fully-integrated Starship flight test on Saturday, November 18, from South Texas. The towering 397-foot launch system, comprising both the Starship and Super Heavy rocket, roared to life at 7:03 a.m. CT, lifting off from the Starbase launch tower in Boca Chica Beach, Texas. Propelled by the rocket’s 33 Raptor V2 engines, the colossal stainless-steel vehicle soared over the Gulf of Mexico. Fueled by liquid oxygen and liquid methane, the entire system required over 10 million pounds of propellant for launch, solidifying its status as the world’s most powerful rocket, capable of generating a staggering 16.7 million pounds of thrust upon liftoff. Crowds gathered along the shores of South Padre Island in anticipation of witnessing the historic Starship flight. Prior to the test flight, SpaceX outlined ambitious plans for Starship, including an Earth fly-around and a mission conclusion with a water landing in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Hawaii. Despite a successful liftoff and stage separation of Starship, the Super Heavy booster met an untimely demise with an explosion over the Gulf of Mexico shortly after separation. Starship pressed on with its journey, traveled at a speed of 24,000 mph (miles per hour), reaching the major milestone of surpassing the Karman line – the internationally recognized boundary signifying the edge of where space begins – before unfortunately being lost.

Starship reached an altitude of ~150 kilometers (km) above Earth when its automated flight termination system initiated the self-destruct sequence, as reported in SpaceX’s mission broadcast. Despite the Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly (RUD) of both Booster 9 and Starship SN25, SpaceX achieved significant goals for the test: the spacecraft successfully lifted off the launchpad, completed stage-separation with the new hot staging vented interstage integration, and surpassed the Karman Line which is located at around 100 km above the ground.

“While it didn’t happen in a lab or on a test stand, it was absolutely a test. What we did today will provide invaluable data to continue rapidly developing Starship,” said SpaceX. “With a test like this, success comes from what we learn, and today’s test will help us improve Starship’s reliability as SpaceX seeks to make life multiplanetary,” said the company. “We’ll continue to share updates here as the team reviews data from today’s test. Thank you to our customers, Cameron County, and the wider community for the continued support and encouragement. And Congratulations to the entire SpaceX team on an exciting second flight test of Starship!”

“This rapid iterative development approach has been the basis for all of SpaceX’s major innovative advancements, including Falcon, Dragon, and Starlink,” said the company. “Recursive improvement is essential as we work to build a fully reusable transportation system capable of carrying both crew and cargo to Earth orbit, help humanity return to the Moon, and ultimately travel to Mars and beyond.”

While NASA has selected SpaceX to develop a Starship Human Landing System (HLS) for the Artemis III mission to land astronauts on the Moon by 2025, numerous test flights lie ahead before Starship carries humans. SpaceX engineers will meticulously analyze data from this test, implement necessary changes, and iterate until the spacecraft is deemed ready for the monumental task of safely transporting payloads and, eventually, humans aboard Starship.

“Each test represents a step closer to putting the first woman on the Moon with the Artemis III Starship HLS,” said Jim Free, NASA’s associate administrator for exploration systems development. “Looking forward to seeing what can be learned from this test that moves us closer to the next milestone.”
