
In a strategic move aimed at strengthening its space exploration capabilities, SpaceX has reportedly acquired Pioneer Aerospace, a company specializing in manufacturing parachutes crucial for the safe return of SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft.
According to The Information, a Florida bankruptcy filing reveals SpaceX will pay $2.2 million for Pioneer Aerospace, whose parent company recently filed for bankruptcy.
Pioneer Aerospace, founded in 1938, has been a key supplier of parachutes for various SpaceX and NASA missions. Notable contributions include providing parachutes for multiple NASA missions that transport astronauts and cargo to and from the International Space Station (ISS).
Dragon is equipped with four parachutes, two main ones and a pair of drogue parachutes. The main parachutes are manufactured by another company called ‘Airborne Systems’. The Pioneer Aerospace drogue chutes are designed for high-velocity and deploy after the capsule reenters Earth’s atmosphere at an altitude of around 18,000 feet above the ground as Dragon moves at a speed of around 563 kilometers per hour, while the main parachutes deploy at an altitude of around 6,000 feet to perform a parachute-assisted landing in the ocean.
Most recently, in September Pioneer parachutes enabled NASA to complete the OSIRIX-Rex mission which successfully brought samples from a 4.6 billion-year-old asteroid to be analyzed by scientists on Earth.
NASA plans to operate the Space Station for at least eight more years and retire it sometime in the year 2031 if humanity achieves building a lunar base before then. SpaceX will continue to launch astronauts to the ISS as part of NASA Commercial Crew Program contracts for as long as necessary, and it will require continued use of Dragon and the reliable parachute systems.
SpaceX is actively working on developing Starship, its next-generation rocket-ship that will someday replace the Dragon and Falcon 9 rocket. Starship is designed to return humans to the moon as part of NASA’s Artemis program that aims to land the first woman and next man on the lunar surface by 2025.
