
SpaceX’s Starlink internet service has triumphed in a rigorous nine-month testing phase conducted by the U.S. military in the Arctic region. Brian Beal, Principal Engineer at the Air Force Research Laboratory’s Integrated Capabilities Directorate, shared to that Starlink proved to be a “reliable and high-performance communications system in the Arctic, including on-the-move applications,” he said. The tests assessed Starlink’s suitability for the Pentagon’s requirements.
Beal confirmed that after securely mounting the terminals to withstand harsh weather, Starlink functioned flawlessly. “We tested in some very high winds and very cold temperatures; That all went smoothly though. Once we got the terminals mounted securely to withstand high winds, they worked great with no issues,” he said.
The significance of these tests lies in the Arctic’s growing strategic importance, as both China and Russia seek to increase their influence in the region. The United States, in response, has been exploring ways to enhance its presence in the Arctic. Traditional communication methods through existing military satellites have faced challenges in the remote Arctic location, making Starlink a crucial solution.
In November 2022, the Pentagon commended Starlink for its role in keeping U.S. troops connected in the Arctic. Brian Beal emphasized the quick setup capabilities, stating, “You can imagine an Army, Air Force, or Navy unit deployed to a remote location that doesn’t have the cell-phone service niceties and very quickly have communications at high rates that an airman can set up in 10 minutes–that’s a great capability to have.”
SpaceX also offers ‘Starshield’ which is broadband satellite service exclusively designed for military and government use. Starshield is compatible with the Starlink constellation to interoperate. “Starlink’s inter-satellite laser communications terminal, which is the only communications laser operating at scale in orbit today, can be integrated onto partner satellites to enable incorporation into the Starshield network,” states SpaceX.
