Humanity has not set foot on the Moon in half a century. NASA is collaborating with SpaceX to return โ this time to build a lunar base as part of the Artemis program. SpaceX aims to build a fully-reusable Starship launch system that will enable a sustainable lunar presence. The aerospace company is developing a Starship variant called Human Landing System (HLS), especially designed to land on the lunar surface.
In a significant step towards the Artemis program’s lunar exploration goals, NASA astronauts Nicole Mann and Doug Wheelock recently participated in a test of SpaceX’s Starship HLS elevator. The elevator, designed for NASA’s upcoming Artemis III and IV missions, will facilitate the seamless transfer of crew and equipment between the lunar surface and the habitable area atop the Starship lander.
SpaceX is developing the Starship vehicle at its Starbase facility located at Boca Chica Beach, Brownsville, Texas. However, the astronauts conducted the test at SpaceX’s Hawthorne, California facility. The test featured a sub-scale mockup elevator equipped with a full-scale basket section, complete with functional mechanical assemblies and crew interfaces. The demonstration allowed the astronauts to experience a flight-like design, offering valuable insights for both functionality and crew interaction

During the test, Mann and Wheelock wore spacesuits to simulate the mobility constraints they would have in lunar conditions; the new suits are developed by Axiom Space. The astronauts provided crucial feedback on various aspects, including elevator controls, gate latches, ramp deployment interfaces, cargo space, and dynamic operations along the vertical rail system. The elevator’s role in supporting crew members during moonwalks and ensuring a smooth transition between the lunar surface and Starship’s habitable zone is pivotal for the success of the Artemis missions.
Notably, the Artemis program aims to achieve historic milestones by landing “the first woman and the first person of color on the “Moon” by 2025. It’s important to note that the agency has not yet announced who will be the brave astronauts that will make the historic lunar landing return. It has only announced a crew that will test the Orion Space Launch System capabilities on the Artemis II voyage around the Moon, as previously reported by Cosmic Chronicles.
SpaceX Starship HLS will complement the Orion Space Launch System rocket, Axiom’s advanced spacesuits, rovers, and the Gateway (Space Station) that will be deployed to orbit the Moon. These technologies underscores NASA’s dedication to advancing deep space exploration with a collaboration with private partners like SpaceX. The Artemis program remains at the forefront of humanity’s journey into the cosmos. Read previous Cosmic Chronicles to learn more about the ambitious Artemis program, linked below.
