In the quest to send humans to Mars, NASA’s Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment (MOXIE) plays a crucial role. MOXIE is designed to produce oxygen from the thin carbon dioxide-rich atmosphere of Mars. This remarkable experiment is onboard the Perseverance Rover which touched down in Mars’ Jezero Crater on February 18, 2021. The rover is embarking on an ambitious mission to explore the planet’s geology and seek signs of past microbial life. Nestled within the rover’s impressive suite of scientific instruments is MOXIE, a small, toaster-sized device that holds immense promise for future human exploration.

THE MOXIE EXPERIMENT
MOXIE demonstrated how to create breathable air on the Martian surface.
It successfully produced oxygen on Mars for the first time on April 20, 2021, and has since demonstrated its capability to generate oxygen from the carbon dioxide present in the Red Planet’s atmosphere. MOXIE has achieved multiple runs, generating oxygen at different rates to validate its functionality and performance in the challenging Martian environment. These successful oxygen production runs mark a significant milestone in the development of technologies necessary for future human survival.

THE WORKING PRINCIPLE
MOXIE utilizes a unique process known as solid oxide electrolysis, where electricity is passed through a ceramic material acting as an electrolyte. The electricity is used to separate compounds into their individual elements. It splits the carbon dioxide (CO2) molecules into oxygen (O2) and carbon monoxide (CO) ions. These reactions occur at high temperatures of around 800 degrees Celsius (1,472 degrees Fahrenheit). By adjusting the temperature and optimizing the electrochemical reactions, MOXIE can produce up to 10 grams of oxygen per hour, which is equivalent to the amount needed to sustain a human for 10 minutes.
In the future, NASA engineers plan to build a bigger version of MOXIE for oxygen production at larger scale. The experiment has provided valuable insights and data for scientists to refine the technology and enhance its efficiency for future missions.
BENEFITS FOR HUMAN EXPLORATION
The success of MOXIE will revolutionize space exploration. The ability to generate oxygen from the planet’s atmosphere is important because it means less reliance on Earth for crucial supplies and significantly reduces the cost and complexity of missions. Oxygen produced by MOXIE can be used for breathing, which is an incredible technological breakthrough for humans to become a multiplanet species someday. Also, oxygen will be necessary for creating rocket propellant which will enable astronauts to travel back to Earth or explore other parts of the Solar System.
NASA is pushing the boundaries of what is possible and taking crucial steps towards making Mars a viable destination for a human settlement. The agency plans to collaborate with companies, like SpaceX, to launch the first humans to the Red Planet sometime after it returns NASA astronauts to the Moon in the year 2025.
