SpaceX is preparing for its fourth integrated flight test (IFT-4) of the Starship spacecraft, which could liftoff as soon as early June. This week, the company performed crucial pre-flight testing at its Starbase facility, marking significant progress towards the anticipated launch.

The nearly 400-foot-tall (121-meter) rocket, comprising the Super Heavy booster and Starship upper stage, underwent a launch rehearsal known as a Wet Dress Rehearsal (WDR). During this test, SpaceX engineers simulated the entire launch countdown process, including loading over 10 million pounds of super-cold methane and liquid oxygen propellants into the rocket. The rehearsal, which concluded before engine ignition, is critical for gathering data on the rocket’s performance and ensuring all systems function correctly.

Following the WDR, ground teams removed the Starship upper stage from the booster to perform additional work on its heat shield. In the days leading up to the launch, SpaceX will install a self-destruct mechanism, called Flight Termination System (FTS), designed to safely terminate the flight by destroying the spacecraft if it veers off course.

SpaceX’s launch team now awaits a spaceflight launch license from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to liftoff from Boca Chica Beach, Texas. The FAA is reviewing the company’s internal report on the previous test flight conducted in March.

SpaceX founder Chief Engineer Elon Musk shared the primary objective for the upcoming flight, stating, “Starship Flight 4 in about 2 weeks. Primary goal is getting through max reentry heating,” he wrote via 𝕏 on May 20. “Worth noting that no one has ever succeeded in creating a fully reusable heat shield. [NASA Space] Shuttle required >6 months of rework,” he said. The Starship’s heat shield, known as the Thermal Protection System (TPS) and nicknamed “Starbrick,” features hexagonal ceramic tiles capable of withstanding extreme temperatures exceeding 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit. This design ensures robust protection during reentry, with the stainless-steel spacecraft requiring additional shielding only on one side. SpaceX has been working go improve TPS and will test it during the upcoming IFT-4.

Flight 4 may liftoff as soon as early June, according to Cameron County officials who announced road closures for Boca Chica Beach and Highway 4 from June 1 to June 3 to ensure public safety during the launch window. These closures indicate that SpaceX is targeting these dates for the potential liftoff, subject to weather conditions and FAA approval. “I have ordered the closure of Boca Chica Beach and Hwy 4 for the purpose of protecting Public Health and Safety during SpaceX flight testing activities on June 1, 2024, in the time period between 12:00 a.m. C.S.T. to 2:00 p.m. C.S.T. and in the alternative on June 2, 2024 or June 3, 2024, from 12:00 a.m. C.S.T. to 2:00 p.m. C.S.T., of the same day. Should SpaceX not complete its planned flight-testing activity on June 1, 2024, then SpaceX may use the alternate dates to complete its testing activities,” said Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño in the announcement. UPDATE: SpaceX announced on May 24 they target June 4th for Flight 4.

SpaceX hasn’t yet shared the flight trajectory for Starship Flight 4, it is expected to be similar to the previous flight. The company aims to liftoff from Boca Chica Beach, land the rocket booster in the Gulf of Mexico as Starship continues its flight into space to circle the Earth, and the goal is to reenter the atmosphere intact to execute a controlled landing in the Indian Ocean water. Every test flight brings SpaceX one step closer to realizing its vision of a fully reusable spacecraft capable of interplanetary travel.
