Excitement filled the air as thousands of space enthusiasts gathered at South Padre Island to witness SpaceX launch its fourth integrated Starship flight on June 6. The South Texas region, also known as Rio Grande Valley, has been in the spotlight, attracting tourists thanks to SpaceX’s spaceflight operations. The company has boosted the local economy, provided hundreds of jobs, and inspired a whole new generation to look up at the stars.

The company’s founder Elon Musk is determined to expand “the light of consciousness” beyond Earth. SpaceX has ignited the curiosity of millions to learn about space exploration and also believe in the importance of creating a multiplanetary future for humanity.

Today, Cosmic Chronicles journalist (@JaneidyEve), witnessed that excitement in the smiles of a multitude of people who woke up really early to witness the historic Starship Flight 4 at a launch viewing event.

During the pre-dawn hours, hundreds of people gathered at Isla Blanca Park, a ship channel with a direct view of the Starbase launch site at Boca Chica Beach. However, the launch tower was nearly invisible under the extremely foggy conditions but people didn’t allow that to fog their excitement.

Starship Flight 4 successfully lifted off at 7:50 a.m. CT. As crowds cheered SpaceX on, Starship Super Heavy’s engines powerfully roared and the stainless-steel vehicle climbed into the sky, disappearing behind the clouds. All that was visible from the ground was the long fiery trial the rocket’s 33 Raptors created upon liftoff, as shown in the video linked below.

“The fourth flight of Starship made major strides to bring us closer to a rapidly reusable future. Its accomplishments will provide data to drive improvements as we continue rapidly developing Starship into a fully reusable transportation system designed to carry crew and cargo to Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars, and beyond,” said SpaceX in a statement.

Some of the ambitious objectives Starship achieved include the first-ever Super Heavy booster ocean landing. Following stage separation, the booster completed a flip maneuver and a boost-back burn toward the splashdown zone; It performed a controlled splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico at 7 minutes and 24 seconds into the flight.

All while Starship continued its trajectory powered by its six Raptor engines. The spacecraft successfully made it into space and followed its planned trajectory half-way around Earth. “Starship made a controlled reentry, successfully making it through the phases of peak heating and max aerodynamic pressure and demonstrating the ability to control the vehicle using its flaps while descending through the atmosphere at hypersonic speeds,” shared the company, alongside an incredible video of Starship reentering (shown below).

Flight 4 concluded with Starship igniting its three center Raptor engines to perform a flip maneuver and landing burn; it achieved a soft splashdown in the Indian Ocean at 1 hour and 6 minutes after launch. This marked the first successful space return with a flip-maneuver and landing burn.

“Starship’s fourth flight test launched with ambitious goals, attempting to go farther than any previous test before and begin demonstrating capabilities central to return and reuse of Starship and Super Heavy. The payload for this test was the data. Starship delivered,” shared the company in an update soon after the launch. Starship was equipped with Starlink antennas that enabled real-time telemetry and live video throughout the flight, providing spectacular views.

SpaceX founder and Chief Engineer Elon Musk highlighted the broader significance of the mission –“Today was a great day for humanity’s future as a spacefaring civilization! Nothing unites us more than working together towards inspiring objectives.”

“Congratulations to the entire SpaceX team on an inspired fourth flight test of Starship! And thank you to our customers, Cameron County, spaceflight fans, and the wider community for the continued support and encouragement,” said the company.

SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell expressed her excitement: “Congratulations and a huge thank you to our extraordinary SpaceX team! Successful Super Heavy launch and landing, ‘orbital’ ship entry, engine relight, and splashdown. I hope you enjoyed the views, the music, and see you back soon for our next flight!”
