Excitement is brewing under the South Texas sun where hundreds of space enthusiasts from around the world have traveled to witness history — SpaceX’s first-ever attempt to catch the gigantic Super Heavy rocket during the upcoming Starship Flight 5, scheduled for Sunday, October 13 at 7:00 a.m. Central Time (CT). The company plans to share a live broadcast of Flight 5 in the video linked below, it begins at around 6:30 a.m. CT (all dates and times are subject to change).

Key objectives for this mission include the first-ever return to the launch site for the Super Heavy booster and a controlled splashdown of Starship in the Indian Ocean. The stainless-steel test vehicles that will perform this flight are identified as Starship 30 and Booster 12. Many upgrades have been made to both hardware and software in preparation for this flight. “One of the key upgrades on Starship ahead of flight was a complete rework of its heatshield, with SpaceX technicians spending more than 12,000 hours replacing the entire thermal protection system with newer-generation tiles, a backup ablative layer, and additional protections between the flap structures. This massive effort, along with updates to the ship’s operations and software for reentry and landing burn, will look to improve upon the previous flight and bring Starship to a soft splashdown at the target area in the Indian Ocean,” shared the company.
SpaceX engineers have dedicated years of preparation and months of testing to optimize the infrastructure at Starbase, ensuring the booster catch attempt’s success with the launch tower arms, nicknamed “Mechazilla.” The name is a reference to a robotic character of the Godzilla film franchise. A specific set of criteria must be met prior to a catch attempt, requiring healthy systems on both the booster and the launch tower, as well as good weather conditions along the Boca Chica Beach coast. In the event conditions are not favorable, the booster will execute a standard landing burn and splash down in the Gulf of Mexico instead.
The returning booster will generate sonic booms as it slows from supersonic speeds, which may be audible in the surrounding Rio Grande Valley area, especially at South Padre Island and the city of Brownsville neighboring Boca Chica Beach. If you live in the region, make sure to inform your family and friends about the “sonic booms” they might hear so they don’t panic.

Each test flight builds on insights gained from prior missions and helps engineers improve the rocket-ship. SpaceX has an ambitious goal to return NASA astronauts to the moon’s surface by 2026 aboard a lunar-optimized version of Starship. Frequent testing enables the company to advance the spacecraft’s development to meet that tight schedule.
