On Sunday, October 13, 2024, history was made in South Texas as SpaceX achieved a groundbreaking milestone: the first successful catch of its Super Heavy rocket by the “Mechazilla” launch tower during Starship Flight 5. Enthusiastic spectators from across the United States and beyond gathered to witness this remarkable event, marking a pivotal moment in the quest for fully reusable space travel. Fast and rapid rocket-ship reusability is key to making life multiplanetary. SpaceX is taking on the challenge to make it a reality.

Cosmic Chronicles journalists witnessed the historic launch event from Isla Blanca Park at South Padre Island, Texas, where SpaceX’s Starbase launch site at Boca Chica Beach is clearly visible from across the ship channel. Watch the incredible video from Cosmic Chronicles‘ perspective, linked below.

The flight lifted off at 7:25 a.m. Central Time under clear skies, showcasing SpaceX’s most ambitious objectives to date. The Super Heavy booster, powered by an astonishing 33 Raptor engines, generated over 16.7 million pounds of thrust—twice that of the historic Saturn V rockets that took astronauts to the Moon. Standing at an impressive 397 feet tall, the combined height of Starship surpasses that of the Statue of Liberty by 90 feet.

Starship executed a successful hot-staging separation, igniting its six Raptor engines to propel itself into orbit. While the booster ascended, the crowd watched in awe, cheering as it successfully returned to the launch pad and was caught by the Mechazilla’s giant chopstick arms. This achievement required meeting thousands of specific criteria, and the triumph on the first attempt underscored the dedication and expertise of the SpaceX engineering team.

Meanwhile, Starship continued its voyage halfway around Earth. The spacecraft was equipped with Starlink antennas to relay data and it shared beautiful live views of planet Earth as it was cruising in space, see videos shown below. After a flight that lasted around an hour, Starship performed a controlled reentry with a belly flop maneuver and splashdown in the Indian Ocean. The entire mission concluded at 1 hour, 5 minutes, and 40 seconds after liftoff.

Residents in the Rio Grande Valley experienced the sonic booms generated by the returning booster, adding to the excitement of the day. The successful catch and flight test inspired not only those present at Boca Chica Beach but also millions watching the live broadcast worldwide, igniting dreams of human colonization of the Moon and Mars.

“The entire SpaceX team should take pride in the engineering feat they just accomplished,” the company stated. “The world witnessed what the future will look like when Starship starts carrying crew and cargo to destinations on Earth, the Moon, Mars, and beyond.”

“Congratulations to the SpaceX team for taking this leap in our quest to make life multiplanetary. And thank you to our customers, Cameron County, spaceflight fans, and the wider community for the continued support and encouragement,” said the company.

This historic flight serves as a beacon of inspiration, fueling hopes for a new era in space exploration and reaffirming the importance of innovation and perseverance in achieving the extraordinary.
