On November 19, President-elect Donald Trump traveled to Brownsville, Texas, to witness SpaceX’s sixth fully-integrated test flight of the Starship spacecraft. Prior to the launch, Trump expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I’m heading to the Great State of Texas to watch the launch of the largest object ever to be elevated, not only to Space, but simply by lifting off the ground. Good luck to Elon Musk and the Great Patriots involved in this incredible project!”

Later that evening, they shared photos of SpaceX founder Elon Musk and Trump together at the Starbase launch facility in Boca Chica, Texas, where the historic flight took place. Musk has recently become a key adviser to Trump, a partnership that could boost SpaceX’s goals and NASA’s exploration ambitions, especially in the effort to return astronauts to the Moon during Trump’s second presidential term.

SpaceX’s Starship Flight 6 was a test to further the goal of making the entire system reusable. The flight, which launched from SpaceX’s Starbase, drew thousands of spectators to South Padre Island, Texas, with tourists and space enthusiasts from across the U.S. and beyond gathering to witness the momentous event.

The Super Heavy booster lifted off at 4:00 p.m. CT, with all 33 Raptor engines propelling the stainless-steel rocket-ship into the sky. Spectators erupted into applause as the rocket ascended into the atmosphere. Journalists from Cosmic Chronicles, stationed at Isla Blanca Park, captured remarkable footage of the flight, sharing an incredible videos of the event from their vantage point (shown below).

The flight proceeded smoothly, with the booster separating from the spacecraft after a nominal ascent. The booster began its return to the launch site but was forced to abort a catch attempt. According to SpaceX, “During this phase, automated health checks of critical hardware on the launch and catch tower triggered an abort of the catch attempt. The booster then executed a pre-planned divert maneuver, performing a landing burn and soft splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico.” Cosmic Chronicles saw fire briefly erupt in the ocean after the booster splashdown, captured in the short video clip shown below.

Meanwhile, Starship continued its ascent, demonstrating key capabilities by reigniting one of its Raptor engines in space for the first time. This maneuver was essential for the ship’s ability to conduct a deorbit burn in future fully orbital missions. After around an hour, the spacecraft re-entered the atmosphere, performing a flip-maneuver and a successful landing burn, ultimately splashing down in the Indian Ocean to complete the test flight.

“Congrats to SpaceX on Starship’s sixth test flight. Exciting to see the Raptor engine restart in space—major progress towards orbital flight.Starship’s success is #Artemis’ success. Together, we will return humanity to the Moon & set our sights on Mars,” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson.

SpaceX’s team gathered critical data during Flight 6, including data from its improved heatshields and insights into the vehicle’s performance at higher speeds and more aggressive angles of attack. The valuable feedback will aid in making the Starship system more reliable and closer to achieving full reusability. During Flight 6, SpaceX used a toy banana as a zero-g indicator inside the Starship vehicle. The banana is a reference to the “banana for scale” joke space enthusiasts have often mentioned to highlight Starship’s gigantic size. “You can see our stuffed banana payload, which is doubling as today’s zero gravity or zero-g indicator. And while this payload will remain inside the vehicle at all times and will not be deployed today, it did give us a chance to do a test run of payload approval processes with the FAA [Federal Aviation Administration], and that’s something that we’re hoping to do next year if we start flying our first Starlink satellites on Starship,” said SpaceX quality engineering manager Kate Tice during the Flight 6 live broadcast. “Godspeed, banana!”
