SpaceX Now Targets March 6 for Starship Flight 8 After Technical Issues

SpaceX’s ambitious eighth test flight of Starship, the largest and most powerful rocket ever constructed, was scrubbed on Monday evening (March 3) just 40 seconds before liftoff from its Starbase facility in South Texas. The company encountered technical issues with both the rocket’s Super Heavy booster and its Ship upper stage, prompting the launch team to halt the countdown. SpaceX founder Elon Musk attributed the delay to a combination of issues, including a glitch in the Super Heavy booster’s pressurization system. Following the scrub, SpaceX announced that the next launch attempt for Flight 8 is now scheduled for Thursday, March 6, during a 60-minute window opening at 5:30 p.m. CT.

The delay comes as SpaceX continues to refine Starship’s design after a series of iterative test flights. The company noted that, following the loss of Starship early in its seventh flight test, it has implemented “several hardware and operational changes” to enhance the reliability of the upper stage. The upcoming flight aims to build on these improvements, targeting objectives unmet in prior missions, including the deployment of Starship’s first payload and a suite of reentry experiments designed to pave the way for returning the upper stage to the launch site for a catch by the tower’s “chopsticks.”

Flight 8 will follow a suborbital trajectory similar to previous tests, with the Super Heavy booster launching and then attempting a return and catch at the Starbase tower—a maneuver requiring precise coordination and healthy systems on both the booster and the tower. SpaceX emphasized that safety remains paramount: if automated health checks or the mission’s Flight Director deem conditions unfavorable, the booster will divert to a soft splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico. The booster’s return is expected to generate sonic booms audible in the surrounding area, though SpaceX stated that the impact should be limited to a brief, thunder-like noise influenced by weather and distance.

The upper stage, meanwhile, will carry four Starlink simulators—mock satellites sized similarly to SpaceX’s next-generation Starlink constellation—as its first payload deployment exercise. These simulators will follow Starship’s suborbital path and are expected to burn up upon reentry. The flight test will also feature a single Raptor engine relight in space, a critical step toward mastering orbital operations.

Significant upgrades debuted on Starship’s upper stage during the previous flight, including redesigned forward flaps to reduce reentry heating, a propulsion system with 25% more propellant capacity, and a fully revamped avionics suite for greater redundancy and capability. For Flight 8, SpaceX is pushing the envelope further with reentry experiments, such as removing numerous heat shield tiles to test vulnerable areas, trialing metallic tile alternatives (including one with active cooling), and refining catch fittings and tile edges to address hot spots observed on Flight 6. The reentry profile will deliberately stress the rear flaps’ structural limits at peak dynamic pressure, while radar sensors on the launch tower aim to improve distance measurements for a potential upper-stage catch.

The Super Heavy booster has also received upgrades, including a more robust flight computer, enhanced power and network systems, and integrated smart batteries. SpaceX underscored that developmental testing like Flight 8 inherently carries risks but accelerates progress. “By putting flight hardware in a flight environment as frequently as possible, we’re able to quickly learn and execute design changes as we seek to bring Starship online as a fully and rapidly reusable vehicle,” the company stated.

As SpaceX prepares for Flight 8, all eyes will be on Starbase to see if Starship can achieve its most ambitious test yet, bringing the company closer to its goal of revolutionizing space travel.
