Today, April 4, SpaceX’s Fram2 mission, the first human spaceflight to orbit Earth’s polar regions, successfully concluded with a splashdown of the Crew Dragon capsule “Resilience” in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Southern California. The four-person crew, consisting of mission commander Chun Wang, vehicle commander Jannicke Mikkelsen, pilot Rabea Rogge, and mission specialist Eric Philips, returned to Earth after a groundbreaking 3.5-day journey that marked several milestones in space exploration.
The splashdown occurred at 12:19 p.m. ET, with the Dragon capsule parachuting into the waters near Oceanside, California. This event marked the first time a SpaceX crewed mission has landed in the Pacific Ocean, a shift from previous recoveries off Florida’s coast in the Atlantic or Gulf of Mexico. The change in landing zone was implemented to reduce the risk of debris from the capsule’s expendable trunk falling over populated areas, allowing for a controlled reentry and disposal over the ocean.
The Fram2 mission launched on March 31 from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida aboard a Falcon 9 rocket. Funded privately by Maltese cryptocurrency billionaire Chun Wang, the mission aimed to achieve a historic first by sending humans into a polar orbit, a trajectory that allowed the crew to pass over both the North and South Poles every 93 minutes. During their time in space, the crew completed 22 scientific experiments, including studies on human health in microgravity, muscle retention, fungal growth, and the first-ever X-ray taken in space. They also captured unprecedented footage of Earth’s polar regions, providing new perspectives on the Arctic and Antarctic (picturer below).

Throughout their first two full days on-orbit, the crew took the first-ever X-ray in space, 130 years after the first X-ray was captured.

Following the splashdown, SpaceX recovery crews aboard the ship Shannon quickly secured the Crew Dragon and hoisted it onto the deck. In a pioneering test, the Fram2 astronauts exited the capsule unassisted, a demonstration of their ability to perform functional tasks independently after a short-duration spaceflight. This egress experiment, a first for SpaceX, is seen as a critical step in preparing for future missions to destinations like Mars, where crews may need to disembark without external support. Unlike astronauts returning from long-duration stays on the International Space Station, who are typically carried out due to physical weakness, the Fram2 crew—Wang, Mikkelsen, Rogge, and Philips—successfully climbed out after lifting their 35-pound survival gear through the hatch.

The mission, named after the 19th-century Norwegian ship Fram that explored polar regions, carried a piece of the original vessel’s teak decking into space as a symbolic tribute. Chun Wang, a Chinese-born entrepreneur who made his fortune in Bitcoin mining, led the all-civilian crew, none of whom had prior aviation or astronaut experience. The Crew Dragon’s high level of automation, combined with ground control support, enabled this unique team to complete their journey successfully.
After exiting the capsule, the astronauts were transported by helicopter to shore, where they underwent an hour of balance and coordination testing followed by brain imaging scans using a portable MRI machine. These post-flight assessments are part of ongoing research to understand how short- and long-duration spaceflight affects human physiology, with implications for future deep-space exploration.
The Fram2 mission represents SpaceX’s 17th human spaceflight and its 16th successful crew recovery. It is also the company’s third all-civilian privately chartered flight, following Inspiration4 and Polaris Dawn. The polar orbit, a first for crewed missions, provided valuable data to complement equatorial missions, enhancing global climate models and disaster response systems. The crew’s timelapse videos of Earth, including views from Antarctica to the North Pole every 46 minutes, have been widely celebrated, with plans to share high-resolution versions post-mission.
SpaceX hailed the mission as a success, noting that 66 crewmembers have now flown aboard the Dragon spacecraft. The company’s shift to West Coast recoveries, starting with Fram2, underscores its commitment to safety and operational efficiency as it prepares for more ambitious endeavors, including potential crewed missions to the Moon and Mars.
The Fram2 crew, now safely back on Earth, expressed pride in their achievements. “Proud to bring to space some incredible cameras and lenses capturing the first images of the Arctic and Antarctic shot by humans from space,” Mikkelsen posted online during the mission. Their return marks the end of a historic chapter in private space exploration, setting the stage for further advancements in humanity’s reach beyond Earth.
