Cosmic Chronicles Journalists witnessed history today, this is their story.

As the sun dipped over the ocean, I stood on the sandy beaches of Isla Blanca in South Padre Island, with my camera in hand and heart pounding with anticipation. A crowd gathered, just a 35-minute drive from SpaceX’s Starbase facility in Boca Chica Beach, to witness what promised to be a pivotal moment in space exploration: the 10th integrated flight test of the Starship rocket.

After multiple delays and consecutive scrubs in recent attempts due to thunderstorms, the countdown finally reached T-minus-zero at 6:30 p.m. CDT, and the colossal vehicle roared to life, etching a fiery trail across the evening sky.

The launch was nothing short of spectacular. From my vantage point about 5 miles away across the ship channel, the initial rumble built like distant thunder, vibrating through the ground and chest as the Super Heavy booster’s 33 Raptor engines ignited in unison.

The flame was so bright, illuminating the horizon as Starship – comprising Booster 16 and Ship 37 – lifted off from the Mechazilla launch tower at Starbase, Texas. Cheers erupted from the crowd, a mix of locals, space enthusiasts, and tourists who’d flocked to this coastal spot for the best public viewing. The sound wave hit us seconds later, a deep, bone-shaking boom that drowned out everything else, reminding me why this island has become a pilgrimage site for rocket watchers.

As the rocket ascended, we tracked its progress on our phones via SpaceX’s live stream, but nothing compared to the raw experience in person. The plume expanded into a massive fireball, then tapered into a graceful arc as Starship separated from the booster about three minutes into flight. The Super Heavy booster performed a boost-back burn, aiming for a controlled return, while the upper stage continued onward.

This wasn’t just a test flight; it marked a significant milestone for SpaceX’s ambitious Starship program, designed to be the world’s most powerful and fully reusable launch system. Standing at nearly 400 feet tall, Starship is engineered to carry humans to the Moon, Mars, and beyond, while also revolutionizing satellite deployments.

Today’s mission, the fourth Starship test of 2025 and the 10th fully-integrated mission, came after a string of challenges, including three prior failures that tested the team’s resilience. But perseverance paid off: The uncrewed vehicle achieved orbital velocity, successfully deploying eight dummy Starlink satellites – a first for Starship, demonstrating its potential to launch future constellations like expanded Starlink networks through its “PEZ dispenser” mechanism. These payloads, while not operational, simulated the mass and deployment mechanics of real satellites, paving the way for commercial missions. Excitement peaked when confirmation came that the satellites had been released into orbit, a critical step toward Starship’s role in building out global internet coverage through Starlink. The flight culminated in a pinpoint splashdown for the Starship upper stage in the Indian Ocean, completing the full mission profile without major anomalies. The company shared an incredible video of a sooty Starship splashing down, linked below.

Back on the island, the crowd lingered, sharing videos and stories under the stars. One fellow spectator, summed it up: “This is the future – right here, from Texas.” Indeed, with this success, SpaceX edges closer to reach its objectives, all while the echoes of that launch will reverberate along these shores.
