SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket executed the launch of the United States Space Force’s USSF-124 mission on Wednesday, February 14 at 5:30 p.m. ET. The liftoff occurred from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida, marking the seventh launch and landing for the specific booster with tail number B1078-7, and the 11th national security space launch. “A heart-felt thank you to the U.S. Space Force for entrusting SpaceX with today’s mission!” said SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell in an 𝕏 post.

The classified mission involved the deployment of six satellites to low-Earth orbit, with two designated for the U.S. Missile Defense Agency and four for the Space Development Agency (SDA). Due to national security concerns, the specific details regarding the nature of these satellites were not fully-disclosed. All that’s known is that the four SDA satellites are part of the Tranche 0 Tracking Layer missile warning satellite constellation which aid the military with missile defense operations. Remarkably, the Falcon 9’s first stage achieved a vertical touchdown at Cape Canaveral approximately eight minutes after liftoff, marking SpaceX’s 272nd successful landing of an orbital-class rocket and the 243 time it reused a previously-flown rocket. Booster B1078-7 previously utilized in missions such as NASA Crew-6, SES O3b mPOWER, and four Starlink launches, showcased its reliability and reusability.

The Space Force requested SpaceX’s launch broadcast to conclude shortly after the booster landed, underscoring the sensitivity and confidentiality associated with USSF-124.

Col. Jim Horne, senior materiel leader for Space System Command’s Launch Execution Delta, emphasized the importance of such national security launches ~”[…] With each national security launch, we continue to strengthen America’s capabilities and its deterrence in the face of growing threats while adding stability to a very dynamic world. It’s what we do in the Space Force, and we take that charge seriously,” they said.

As the nation enhances its space capabilities, SpaceX’s successful execution of this mission contributes to bolstering U.S. national security and fortifying America’s presence in space.
